If you see a bear, RUN. If a bear chases you, get on top of a van or on one of those square dirt mounds, but do not stop running until you do. Two swipes and you are dead.

The long, stemmed clover looking plants give sticks for bows and arrows. your shirt for the cloth. Hit "E" as you run through the bushes.

I was trying things out last night and discovered sticks and branches can be ignited and used to smelt metal bars in a furnace (I didn't think that would work) and cook food in a barbecue. Interestingly the sticks and branches turn into charcoal as well, whether you are cooking/smelting anything or not, which you can then pick up.

Definitely. The community has been very helpful. I was thinking about compiling it into one guide, maybe try to get it stickied somewhere.

You can pick berries from certain plants by pressing E as you run through the plant. Berries are a very small source of food and hydration, but enough accumulated can save your life.

Although the tooltip on the Hatchet says it's only for harvesting food, etc., from dead animals it will actually chop a tree down as well. It's easy to make, needing only a Stick and a Scrap Metal, but only has 500/500 compared to the Axes you can pick up in the world.

A wooden Torch, made from a Branch, a Piece of Cloth and an Animal Fat lights up the area as you carry it and is also a weapon. Handy if you absolutely have to run around in bad light. It only takes up 10 Encumbrance points, lasts a long time after you ignite it, has 1000/1000 durability. It will also "set many things on fire", according to the info I read, but I haven't tried it out for that purpose and I have no idea what it will Ignite and what it won't yet.

It also continues to burn if you drop it on the ground and you can pick it up again and put it straight back into your Inventory until you need it again. It will already be ignited when you equip it, too!

You can combo hit when chopping trees. Just press again when the animation is about to struck the tree. This will help chop a tree down in double-time.

We have a new e-mail address for you to report hackers. Send us their name, the server you were on and a screenshot if possible (F12 in Steam). Make sure you do it the moment it happens. That will greatly increase our results.

I meant to say this a while back but I discovered that the crafted Machetes also chop down trees, even though the tooltip doesn't mention it.

Make a spear with metal shard and a branch ASAP on a PVP server, it does high damage when thrown at a player, even if just a bodyshot. Do not throw the spear at a zombie, it's a waste. Keep a spear in two equip spots, one for melee and one for throwing, until you can find better than a bow.

Need to replace your backpack and don't want to empty the contents on the floor? Some containers such as the armoire only hold a few items, so open up the kitchen cupboards when it says "Search All" and they will hold all your goodies. This means you can make a new backpack AND keep anyone else from using the cupboards to take your stuff while you do the crafting.

Re my above post... If you aren't near a kitchen when you need to swap backpacks, you can of course make a hand shovel, right click it and select 'dig' and you will have a nice hole in the ground to put stuff in. Make sure you still have the hole in the ground selected as you craft the Backpack, so no-one can pinch your stuff, then when finished you just gather your stuff back.

Can't see your reticle against various backgrounds and find it hard to aim? I cut a small, narrow strip of clear acetate, stuck it to the top of my monitor with sticky tape and let it hang down the screen. I then put a red mark on the acetate where the reticle was.

When playing H1Z1 I flip the acetate down over my screen and enjoy my nice, bright red reticle. For added visibility draw a crosshair on it. It's much easier to aim and hit against a very dark or very bright/colourful background. Flip the acetate up out of the way when not gaming.

  1. Only loot cities with a group.
  2. Avoid other players on solo runs.
  3. Observe target area you plan to loot with binocs.
  4. Crouch/Prone when looting.
  5. Do not walk along the road, follow the road but in the forest.
  6. Stick to an area of the map and become familiar with it.
  7. Observe the Map for spawn areas before you loot the area.

Basically what I do.
